World Environment Day
[ 5thJune ]

Will we go the dinosaur way? Many theories have been advanced about the rather abrupt disappearance of the dinosaurs from the earth. One of these is that they could not sustain the environment they lived in.

We are using fresh water, fertile land, fossil fuels at a rate at which they cannot be replenished. We also pollute, air, water and land, produce non-biodegradable products rendering biomes slowly but surely hostile to life. We have not even solved the problem of sewage and garbage disposal. Creating land fills and pumping into rivers or seas keeps garbage out of sight but not out of harm. How long will we last? Another millennium? or less? These concerns led to the UN Conference on Human Environment, Stockholm on June 5th in 1972. UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) was born to address these issues.

Father's Day
[ 3rd Sunday in June ]

Mrs. John B Dodd thought her dad was one terrific guy. In the late nineteenth century, before single parentage was touted as an issue, her father, William Smart, brought up six kids alone (and well) after the death of his wife. Mrs. John B Dodd tried to get people to appreciate their fathers at least once in a year. President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea. Later President Lyndon Johnson declared the 3rd Sundays in June as Father's Day.

World Blood Donor Day
[ 14th June ]

The birthday of Karl Landsteiner, 14th of June, is observed as World Blood Donor Day. Landsteiner won the Nobel prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.

In developing countries there is a continuous shortage of blood. Patients usually receive blood from a relation or friend or a paid donor when in need. Paid donor blood is less safe than blood from voluntary donors.

World Blood Donor Day hopes to encourage voluntary blood donation, to increase awareness of blood safety and to thank people who have donated blood.

Major organisations that encourage voluntary blood donation like the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society of Blood Transfusion authorise this observance. These organizations have been joined by the World Health Organization, which is co-sponsoring the event. Between them, they represent 192 Member States, 181 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, 50 national voluntary blood donor organizations and blood transfusion specialists throughout the world.

Blood donation hardly makes a difference in terms of health to the donor, but it can help save the life of a patient.

Day against Drug abuse and Illicit trafficking
[ 26thJune ]

In 1987 the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe 26th June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to show its concern for this cause. This lead to a conference in which multi disciplinary methods were adopted to work for this cause.
