Pharmacokinetics

It is a analogue of Xanthine, it increases the deformability of RBC, thereby allowing the RBC to migrate through the capillaries more easily, thus improving the circulation through the blood vessels.

Indications

Pentoxifylline improves the flow of blood through blood vessels. It is used to reduce leg pain caused by poor blood circulation. Pentoxifylline reduces leg cramps due to deficient oxygenation of the lower limbs as a result of circulatory problems and peripheral vascular disease.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

For oral dosage form (extended-release tablets): For peripheral vascular disease : Adults: 400 milligrams (mg) two to three times a day, taken with meals.

Contra Indications

Contraindication are haemorrhage, acute infarction, lactation, porphyria, nicotine use.

Precautions

Precuations should be taken when administering Pentoxifylline with other anti-coagulants or if nicotine is being used by the patient.

Interactions

Smoking tobacco may worsen the condition since nicotine may further enhance the blockage of the blood vessels.
