Top

Indications

It is an ACE inhibitor that belongs to the class of drugs called antihypertensives. Hypertension adds to the work load of the heart and arteries. If it is prolonged duration, the heart and arteries may not function effectively. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, cardiac failure, or renal failure. Hypertension may also increase the risk of MI. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled. Ramipril is used in some patients after a MI. After a MI, some of the cardiac muscle is damaged and weakened. The cardiac muscle may continue to weaken as time goes by, which makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively. Ramipril helps slow down the further weakening of the cardiac musculature. In addition, it is used to treat congestive heart failure.
